One thing I forgot to mention yesterday. I learned that my partner
for the case study project is also the researcher for her new group.
When I learned this my heart instantly sank for her group members.
And then I learned that she only had a few articles so far. It is
easy for those to snowball once you start digging through reference
sections, but who know if she knows how to do that. I'm worried
enough for myself, even with all the articles, because reading all of
them and annotated them is a pretty big undertaking and we only have
a week left. Also, the rest of the project hinges on the researcher
finding the articles and getting that information to the rest of the
group. It was one thing in the case study group when I had to take
the lead on everything. That can't really be done with the research
project. I just hope she asks for help or her group members
recognize that they need help before things are too late.
I finished reading the article on cockfighting today and eventually
got around to writing my discussion post for the week. The
cockfighting article was pretty entertaining in the beginning but it
fell off a bit after that. It was still really interesting, though.
Being able to take your observations from cockfighting and turning
that into an analysis of the culture and society as a whole is really
impressive. On the surface it would seem like just something to do
for sport or entertainment, but underneath that there is so much
going on it is unreal.
After reading the article but before writing I needed a bit of a
brain break so I put together the small table I got. I was really
impressed by it. It is solid birch with a clear coat on it which
makes it look nice and it is very solid. I'm glad I didn't go with a
particle board and veneer desk. I didn't put it together but I took
a look at one of the longer tables I got, which is solid pine. I was
wondering why it was bigger yet cost ten dollars less than the
smaller table and I'm guessing that is because it doesn't have a
clear coat on it. That was a little disappointing, but it doesn't
mention having one on the website so I should have assumed. I'll
have to get some polyurethane and add a coat or two to both tables.
That shouldn't be too hard if I can find the motivation to actually
do it. Probably not this week with all the reading I have to do.
Although it would be a good excuse to put off some of that reading.
Tonight I posted my discussion and replied to two others. I also
posted my reflection for the presentations this weekend and emailed
the final versions of the PowerPoint and newspaper. I still don't
like the PowerPoint but I also don't feel like redoing the whole
thing. Hopefully that doesn't come back to bite me. I know that
compared with individuals in other groups, I am up there in terms of
contributing a lot to the project. Unfortunately those other
individuals were in groups where everyone appeared to pull their own
weight. So although I did more than my fair share, it may not appear
to be the case when my partner's work, or lack thereof, is there to
overshadow me. I'm going to be upset if I am negatively impacted by
her participation.
I don't really have anything else to talk about so I'm going to call
this good. We still don't have internet or cable at the new house,
which at the moment is kind of good because that gives me time to
finish the two tables which will serve as my computer desk, but it
would be nice not having to travel back and forth between houses just
to use the internet. I bring all that up yet again just to
acknowledge the fact that I will now be driving back to the new
house. And because I apparently feel the need to ramble right now
instead of ending this thing so I can go on my merry way. Now that I
have said that, I am certainly done.
