More MAP testing today. Two back-to-back in the morning. Also some
regular classes throughout the day. Having two tests in the morning
really does make the day go by faster. It is really slow standing
there and watching kids test but before you know it, it's lunch time.
During lunch and for a little while after I finally looked through
the small vegetarian cookbook my grandma gave me and wrote down the
recipes that looked good, or interesting, and wrote down what I would
need to buy to actually make them. I plan on going shopping either
Saturday or Sunday. Hopefully.
My one really productive thing today, other than updating my MAP
spreadsheet, was putting Reading Counts on all the third grade
laptops near the end of the day. Pretty much right as the kids were
walking outside at the end of the day a downpour started outside. It
was kind of funny to watch through the window, especially with all
the parents standing around out front waiting for their kids. I was
glad to be inside, working on computers.
On my way back to the lab to get my stuff I stopped and talked to one
of the second grade teachers who was going around the other second
grade teachers room and replacing all the meal worms on the kids'
desks that were either dead or not very active. It was a glimpse
behind the curtain and I asked her if she was trying to destroy my
childhood. The main thing I remember from meal worms in school was
setting the beetles free and then the older kids going out at recess
and stomping on all of them. I was pretty upset by that.
I scheduled a haircut today but it isn't until the thirtieth. I've
needed a haircut for over a week probably and ten more days is going
to be rough. I've already had to do a little trimming myself. I
wouldn't mind trying out longer hair if I wasn't losing my hair, but
I am, so it looks better when it is shorter.
I had a thirty minute visit with the new volunteer kid tonight. We
went to the convenience store like last time so he could get Cheetos
and Mountain Dew and then we went and talked in the park. He told me
that he got drunk last weekend, got caught, told his probation
officer, and has court next week. But he kept trying to make it less
of a big deal because he was honest about the whole thing. Yeah,
being honest about underage drinking while on probation is way better
than not underage drinking in the first place. You just need to be
honest about your stupidity and everything is cool. It's pretty
frustrating. He said he did it because he wanted to but I would
imagine it had more to do with the people he was hanging out with,
because he's a smart kid, but I can see him being easily influenced
by kids he wants to be friends with. I would like to hope this is a
one time thing and that he can avoid these situations in the future
because he is smart enough to actually do things with his life. I
don't want to see him surround himself with poor influences and just
spiral out of control. I want a case with a little kid who's an
idiot because he's a little kid, not because he's a teenager.
