Yesterday I was trying to explain parallel lines to a first grader
that was completely lost to begin with. I tried everything I could
think of, including a lot of line drawings. He didn't even get close
to understanding it and ended up just getting more and more
frustrated. I didn't have the time to sit down and work with him
with twenty other kids in the lab and that made it frustrating for me
as well.
I brought the trash bag of popcorn to school today and I was thankful
about halfway there that it wasn't a completely full bag. I'm weak.
My car didn't smell of popcorn when I got in it after school but the
weather was nice so I drove home with the windows down. We'll see if
everything still smells normal in the morning.
There were two state assessments today and they were boring as
always. They were spaced out enough that I was able to do a few
other things throughout the day but it didn't really make up for
having to stand there and watch kids take a test for a couple hours.
During one of the tests one of the first grade teachers came in with
her mother's Kindle and asked me if I could figure out how to delete
books off it. After the test I did a quick Google search because I
couldn't find anything in the menus, and it ended up being really
simple. Just a click to the left or right while on the book list
screen.
On my way to clock back in after lunch I ran into one of the
kindergarten teachers who was acting as the principal today and he
asked me if I could help him carry some stuff. I clocked in and
followed him outside. After being inside for so many hours it is
incredibly bright outside. I'm already a computer aide and going out
into the blinding sun just made me feel like a nerd crawling out of
my cave. We passed by one of the paras and she made a comment about
me being outside. I said something about not making it out much and
mentioned my blindingly pale skin, pulling up my sleeve a little bit.
I meant it as a joke but I am always surprised at how pale I am.
The underside of my arm really is blinding if I stare at it while
under the bright sun.
After school I returned a couple DVDs and then headed home. I took
maybe a five minute nap but I forced myself to sit up because I
didn't want to ruin my bedtime. The second half of my Chipotle
burrito was just as good as the first. I ended up not going to see
the new volunteer kid tonight because he has a Chemistry test
tomorrow and wanted to spend the time studying for it. I can respect
that and it saves me the gas.
It was my friend's birthday today so I used my now open night to make
her birthday present. I have wanted to make one of those Scrabble
tile artwork things for awhile so I used her birthday as the
opportunity. I bought a game of Scrabble awhile ago and used the
tiles to spell out her full name, glued it to a thick piece of paper,
and framed it. It actually came out looking pretty good and I didn't
glue my fingers together so I am going to say it was a success.
I kept with the crafty theme for the night and sketched out my
official rough draft of a pineapple on the paper I plan on cutting
into. I'm not looking forward to the actual cutting part because
exacto knife cutting gets a bit hard on the hand and wrist after a
very short time. But I am curious to see what it will look like and
I am hoping that curiosity will be enough for me to actually
start/finish it.
Now I am going to end this entry with the obligatory acknowledgment
that I am tired and that it is past my bedtime and that I am going to
go to sleep.
