May 16, 2017

I may or may not be going through a writing funk. Or I may just need to go back to taking notes throughout the day.

I opened at work today, which means I sharpened pencils until the pencil sharpener died. We are apparently close to getting a new sharpener, which is more exciting than it probably should be. That excitement will die as soon as I use it and it disappoints me, but until then, the excitement lives.

I finished updating spreadsheets and printing bookmarks, then cut all the bookmarks out and stuffed them in the appropriate books. I was also able to pull books for my final patron, so I'm all ready for tomorrow.

One of our frequent callers was on a roll today. She called several times throughout the day asking for the numbers of individuals, businesses, and churches in one particular town. On her first call she wanted the number of an individual so I had to go downstairs to get the right phone book. At one point later on one of the other librarians wanted to take it back downstairs but I decided to hold onto it, which was good because we ended up needing it a couple more times.

This afternoon we had our last tech drop-in until August and it went surprisingly well. Throughout the two hour period we had six people and we were constantly helping someone. It actually required all three of us (me, another librarian, and the volunteer), which hasn't happened before. We helped people with mobile printing, Facebook, Apple iCloud, ebooks, email, and annotating PDFs. Quite a mix. We even had a city commissioner and the president of our library board, who used to be the head of the all the libraries in the school district. And we were able to help both of them, mostly, so we are proving that our services are useful. And at least one of the patrons that stopped by said they came because they saw the whiteboard sign I put up in the atrium this morning. I'm glad I actually remembered to do it before the actual drop-in time.

In my last hour of work I quickly edited some information about the summer reading program because it needs to go up on the website tomorrow. At the meeting we had the other day the IT lady volunteered one of the other IT people to make an instructional video and come up with the information. She then forgot to tell him about it. Nothing ever came of it because we all thought other people were doing things, but no one was. And the IT lady was gone today, so that left it to me, to throw together in an hour, because it goes live tomorrow. Good grief. But I got it done, at exactly five o'clock.

After work I ran home, got the packages I needed to return, and dropped them off at the UPS Store. I also got an email from the seller of the component cables that broke, so maybe I can get that replaced. I won't hold my breath but we'll see.

Tonight I read from one of the books I have checked out, played Burnout Paradise, watched YouTube videos, and now I'm watching Friends. I've got one episode left in the first season (after the current one) but I'm going to have to save that for later because it is eleven o'clock and I need to record my audio journal and go to bed.
