September 5, 2014

Last night no one was behind me and I was able to verify that the Your Speed Limit sign goes down to 5mph but when I went slower than that it didn't register. Fun fact.

I started my morning at work once again in the third grade room working on laptops. Type To Learn was installing especially slow and I only made it through four or five computers. Still counts as progress though.

I had a few classes in the lab this morning. For one I gave a brief instruction of a familiarization MAP test. I thought the teacher was going to do it but then she turned it over to me. I'm not sure if the kids got anything out of it or if I was making any sense but we made it through all the questions and then they were able to go back to their regular lab stuff.

I spent a decent part of my day making signs that will show the log-in information for Odyssey, Reading Counts, Type to Learn, and the computer itself. I think they look alright but I'm not sure how readable they will be from farther back in the lab. I might need to end up doing something else. But for now, they might work. I ended my day by gluing them onto construction paper. Sometime next week I'll get around to hanging them up. Maybe Monday morning but I've got four MAP tests on Monday so we'll see.

After work I stopped by the old house so I could write my monthly report for my volunteer thing. I didn't have a single visit with the new volunteer kid last month. Just texting. I think we almost had two visits but for one he got called into work and the other I never heard back from him and he ended up being at work. Hopefully we can hang out next week. I'm going to start looking like a delinquent volunteer.

I took a couple paper box lids from work and loaded them up with books before heading back to the new house. I've still got about a half of a shelf left plus all of my Goosebumps books and then I'll have all of them moved. I still have no clue what to do with them. At the moment they are all stacked up and completely unorganized which is sad. I need to figure something out.

After dinner I watched a bit of Psych and took a short nap before heading back to the old house so I could submit my discussion post for one of my classes. That took me awhile to come up with but I think I ended up with something halfway decent. Hopefully in the not too distant future we will get internet at the new house so I can move my computer over. The original estimate for the cable company to connect our area to their grid was the middle of this month but I guess now they aren't feeling too optimistic about that. That is unfortunate.

I texted with my brother quite a bit tonight which was cool and also the first time that has really happened. We will normally have brief exchanges back and forth but this one was pretty lengthy. It started with him asking me if I had been to a new Asian restaurant in town and at some point we might go get lunch there, which is also something that has never happened. Next week he is starting a job at the public library and I told him I would call him a nerd but considering my career goals and current field of study, it would definitely be a pot calling the kettle black situation. His response: “Well before you consider the nerd statement I should tell you it's a part-time 'housekeeping' job, all I do is clean like a housewife but it pays over $10.50 an hour and still counts as beating you to being a library employee, haha.” I thought that was pretty funny.
