I wrote the
following paragraph on my laptop Thursday night when I got back to
the new house but forgot to put it in my Friday entry. So here it
is:
On my way home
Thursday night I witnessed a bit of a domestic dispute. As I came up
to the street I needed to turn onto I saw a truck on that street,
stopped at the light. I had to slow down quite a bit for the turn
and as I went by the truck I saw a lot of movement in the cab of the
truck, which had the lights on, possibly due to the passenger door
being opened. I kept going up the road but at a creep and when I
looked in my rear view mirror the passenger door opened up completely
and a girl got out. As soon as the light turned green, she ran
across the street and was slowly followed by the truck. I was very
tempted to turn around but it was all happening along a busy road and
now under the bright lights of a car dealership. I feel my decision
not to get involved was a wise one. It was much too late for me to
try to figure out the situation going on between two people that
probably hadn't been sober for several hours. Plus, all the traffic
on the road and the relative closeness of the police station.
Hopefully all turns out well.
Today I got to sleep
in a little bit. I kept waking up but just laid there until I fell
asleep again. I called it quits around 8:45 but it was still nice.
I had a big school
day. I read both chapters in my research book and wrote my
discussion post, which I posted tonight when I came over to the old
house. I also spent quite awhile tracking down a vague memory of
studies about giving incentives to study participants and how it can
affect their performance, because someone mentioned something in
their post about incentives. I ended up finding similar studies and
the theories the studies were either based on or helped develop
(Overjustification Effect, Self Determination Theory, and Cognitive
Evaluation Theory). I think the study I was remembering involved two
groups of people doing really menial tasks, like moving blocks from
one spot to another over and over again. One group was paid at the
end and the other was not. And the group that wasn't paid ended up
having a higher level of satisfaction because they had to come up
with some sort of internal justification for doing such menial work.
While the group that got paid had lower satisfaction because the
amount they got paid wasn't enough to justify what they had spent
their time doing. Or I could be completely wrong. I don't know.
I emailed the two
librarians that the school librarian told me about so hopefully at
least one of them will get back to me and I can send them the
interview questions.
I didn't get around
to emailing my partner because by the time I remembered, I couldn't
get into my work email account, which has all the librarian responses
I got from the public libraries I emailed, so I'll need to email her
tomorrow. I also didn't get around to writing my annotations for my
bibliography because I went in a bit deep to looking up the
Psychology stuff on incentives. So I will need to do that tomorrow.
I think my plan will be to write both annotations while I'm still at
the old house so I don't have to worry about getting distracted by
the internet.
Today I got tired of
looking up the definition of words on my phone, mainly because I'm
tired of using data on my phone. So today I broke out my big
dictionary and thesaurus. Both of which were on the bottom of my
giant stack of books and were a pain to get out. But I managed it
and today I probably used my dictionary more than I have since I
bought it.
