Waking up this morning was not fun, thanks to going to bed exhausted
and not getting a full night of sleep. Loved it.
I opened at work this morning and the pencil sharpener lasted way
longer than normal. I was probably able to sharpen twice as many as
normal, which was surprising. It's the little things.
Today was interesting because it seemed to go by without a lot
happening. Maybe it was the lack of sleep. I spent a lot of time
looking for books written in Korean because in one of the nursing
homes yesterday one of the staff members asked if there would be a
way to get some for a new resident who's first language is Korean.
That turned into a bit of a thing. We only have five books in our
collection written in Korean and they are all children's books. And
it turns out there really isn't an easy way to search interlibrary
loan in a broad way. If you know a particular book you can search
for it and then filter by language. But if you just want all books
written in Korean, you can't really do that. I ended up going about
it very inefficiently. I found the Korean equivalent of Amazon, used
Google Translate to find my way to the books page, and then slowly
started copying and pasting ISBNs into our ILL system. I probably
search close to a hundred numbers and only found a single book. I
ended up emailing and then talking with our ILL person and she put
the question out on a listserv to see if anyone had better ideas. So
fingers crossed on that. I'll keep looking this weekend. I would
like to be able to come up with a list of books that we could get and
then take that back to the nursing home so the resident could see if
anything would interest her.
I remembered at the last minute when I was leaving the building for
lunch that my grandma and aunt were in town today. And by remembered
I mean I looked at my phone and saw the text messages from my sister
saying they were meeting at Olive Garden at noon. And it was noon
when I looked at my phone, so I headed to Olive Garden. It's always
good to see my grandma and catch up with my aunt.
It took awhile for the food to get there so I had about five minutes
to eat my food, and spent about three minutes removing mushrooms. So
I didn't have very much time to be impressed by the meal, and I
wasn't, but the salad and breadsticks were good. And I got to hang
out with my grandma for a little bit, and that's always worth it.
This afternoon we had a meeting about summer reading. I am still
pretty much riding the coattails of the other librarian in our
department because she has done all the work getting everything
ready. I'm really just there to make sure everything doesn't fall
apartment when she leaves. And until she leaves I don't really have
much to do except hang out and act like I know what's going on.
And that was my day at work. I answered the occasional question in
person, on the phone, through email, and chat. I worked on various
little things that I can't actually remember, and I talked to a
fellow librarian for a long time about dogs and cats and things of
that nature. It was a pretty good day.
When I got home I had leftover Chipotle for dinner and watched
YouTube videos. I spent a decent chunk of the night listening to
music and trying to come up with what I want to say for the
conference presentation because we're going to practice tomorrow.
I'm still not really sure. The more I looked at it the less I feel
my participation is really necessary. The vast majority of my work
was not actually used in the final scavenger hunt. I spent a lot of
hours wandering around the library, taking pictures, and coming up
with about thirty clues. The final scavenger hunt included ten
clues, one of which wasn't even mine. My supervisor narrowed down
the questions, worked on the implementation, and did the assessment
after it was all over. So she has a whole bunch to cover and I
basically just need to say “and I came up with some clues.” But
we'll see how it goes.
Now I need to record my audio journal. I've talked too much tonight
trying to come up with what I want to say for the presentation and
I've given myself a headache. And my throat is a little scratchy.
That'll make the audio journal fun.
