I got to sleep in this morning and still had time to read before
work. I'm nearly done with Shutter Island
and it is getting good. I only vaguely remember the movie so I'm not
really sure what's going to happen. I keep coming up with theories
and then changing my mind. Hopefully I can finish it soon.
My main accomplishment at work today
was weeding a bunch of cookbooks. How many cookbooks? I ended the
night at 166. That's a lot of weeding in one day but it actually
went fairly quickly. Because I made all my decisions before printing
off my list I was able to go out and just pull books. I still check
every single book on my list and on the shelf, regardless of whether
or not I'm weeding it, but that goes fast. It is a good thing I do
that though because I found three books that had discrepancies
between the call number on the book and the one in the catalog, and
one of them was actually declared missing at some point because it
had been shelved based on the call number on the book, not the one
that patrons would see in the catalog. I also “found” several
books that had been shelved in the wrong place. Either whoever
shelves that section is a bit dyslexic or the patrons who look at
cookbooks are really confident about putting their books back on the
shelf when in reality they are awful at it. So far this is the worst
section as far as books being shelved incorrectly. But I'm getting
it all sorted out. With the progress I made to day I'll need another
list soon. I can't remember how many books I have this time, I want
to say somewhere around 750, but I do know that it is almost nineteen
pages long and I made it to page thirteen or fourteen today. Tearing
through it.
I also put up my two displays for
this month today. Before I got started with the books I had already
pulled for my main display I made a list for the parent cart in the
children's area, which is my second display for the month. I need to
check on the past statistics for that display because I don't feel
like it will be that popular. We'll see. After I had a list I went
and put up my first display and then went straight into pulling books
for the second display because I now had an empty cart. It went
well.
Weeding and withdrawing books, and
putting up my displays, took up most of my day, which was really
uneventful as a whole, until the last hour of work. I got a call
from Circ that there was a patron in the technology center who had a
permanent ban at the library. There is apparently a history of
incidents and he was finally banned after threatening the life of my
boss. He's got mental health issues, and thankfully tonight he was
really calm, but he's still banned so I had to call the police.
It took the police awhile to arrive
but when they did, three officers showed up and they escorted him
outside. We then had to give a statement to the lead officer. I had
initially called my boss because I was reading through the last
incident report, which said to call the police if he came back, but
it also mentioned a card to give to the police, and I couldn't
remember where that would be. Turns out if a patron is banned we get
a little no-trespassing card from the police with the patrons name on
it, which we then show to the police when they arrive. Anyway, after
the police left I called my boss back just to let her know how
everything had played out. It was all a fairly subdued encounter
because I wasn't the one actually dealing with the patron, the tech
guy was, but the patron remained calm the whole time so it didn't
really seem like a big deal, even though the police were called.
While waiting for the police to show
up I stayed down in Circ and spoke with the assistant manager, at
least I think that's her title. I have only ever had one full
conversation with her before and that was about library school
because she was thinking about applying. Since then I believe she
has applied and will be starting sometime soon. This time it came up
that we both knew my friend. They both worked together at a bar and
I think she and her boyfriend are now living in the same house that
my friend and her boyfriend lived in when they were still in town.
Small town.
After work I watched YouTube videos
and eventually got around to writing this. The Yogcast Christmas
charity streams started today and I got to see a bit of it before
going to work. I plan on going back and watching the full thing this
weekend maybe. It's great background entertainment while I do other
things. And I want to do other things this weekend so it'll be good
to have something that I don't need to pay full attention to. But
that is this weekend. It is now midnight and I am going to go to bed
so that maybe I can get up at a decent time and read again before
work.
