August 24, 2016

I am often surprised by how quickly my days seem to fade from memory. I don't know what that says about me considering the “often” aspect of that statement.

I would say a decent chunk of my day was spent going over my weeding list. It is eighty-one pages long and I think contains over 950 books. I have an emotional attachment to books, which I fear will make me a very conservative weeder, so I have decided to take an analytical approach. We aren't weeding books that have been added to the collection from 2012 to the present, so I went through and underlined all of those so I know they're safe. The next candidates are books that have a publication date of however many years ago and haven't been checked out in however many years. It depends on their Dewey Decimal Number. I went through and put a little line by all of those that meet that criteria, so I know they are good candidates to be weeded. Finally, I am going through and writing how many times they should have been checked out since they were added to the collection. Some of mine should have been checked out at least twice a year and some at least once a year. I'm doing the math and putting that number next to how many times they have actually checked out. That gives me a better visual of which books are obviously under-performing and which ones are on the fence. I got about halfway through doing that. There are other criteria to take into consideration but I thought this would give me a good start. I won't have to go out into the stacks and figure all this stuff out for each book as I come to it, it will already be done so I can quickly check my sheet. This seems like a good plan. Hopefully it works out.

Also, I did all of this editing on my sheet with my left hand. I haven't written with my left hand in quite awhile but this was really good practice. As the day progressed I got pretty good at my left-handed numbers. Some of which look better than my normal numbers now.

I had a meeting with the lady who does individual tech training in the library to go over my classes and the classes she has scheduled outside of the library. I already have all of her classes added to the calendar but they were only placeholders because she hadn't come up with the classes yet. But now she has so I was able to update the calendar with that information. Now I just need to come up with titles and brief descriptions for my October and November classes.

Today I found out the librarian hired with me is also a big fan of Psych, so now we're even better friends. I think I started re-watching it during Winter break and made it through the first season and into the second, which is where I started the other day. But now I think I need to go back and start over with the first season and make it all the way through so I can remember all the references. And because it is a great show and I want to watch it.

Tonight I read chapters in three different books, watched YouTube videos, and practiced rolling on my skateboard. I think I'm getting better. Or at least slightly more comfortable. Progress.

I got an update on my grandma today. Her hip is fine but it looks like there is a small fracture on her pelvis which thankfully shouldn't require surgery. This still sucks but it shouldn't be as bad as last time, so that is good.

Tomorrow I work at noon so I plan on sleeping in. I've been missing that so far this week.
