June 20, 2015

Today I read three articles and one textbook chapter. Not nearly as productive as I could have been but not bad. I've certainly done a lot worse. One of the articles I read was about the importance of play in the workplace. The author is a library director and he implemented a half hour of non-mandatory play a day, which could take the form of video games or board games or whatever else. As pointed out by the author, it is pretty much the exact opposite of Henry Ford's outlook on work, and the Industrial Revolution as a whole, that was more about turning workers into cogs in a machine. One of the examples given in the article was how successful Google is and they go above and beyond to make a fun work environment. So we'll say there is something to the idea. It was a pretty interesting article. Makes me hope I end up at a job with the same philosophy. Or end up in a position where I can implement such a policy.

Tonight I watched Jupiter Ascending. It kind of reminded me of John Carter. When it came to that movie, I thought it was good but the title was awful because it sounded like a Denzel Washington movie, not a movie about Mars. I would say the title alone was a big reason for that flop, and of course the marketing budget of an indie film. But I enjoyed the movie, probably because I read the book. I also enjoyed Jupiter Ascending, but not necessarily because it was a good movie. It seemed to be all over the place and lacking in explanations at times. I think the story and plot would have been better in book form. It kind of felt like a book story that had been taken literally, rather than being adapted to make sense in movie. And they didn't really wrap up the loose ends of the two other siblings, maybe in the hope of sequels, but that doesn't seem very likely. Anyway, the action was good and it was a fun movie.

Tomorrow will involve more reading. Those are the only plans so far. Hopefully I can be a little better about that. It would also be nice start working on the CSS for my website but I've only read one chapter so far and I doubt I have the motivation after reading a few more tomorrow. But it also might be a good idea to start writing the CSS as I go, so we'll see.
