Not a lot happening at work today. I read several books. I was
there before 9:30AM for the kid show and then the first regular movie
didn't start until 12:15PM so I had some extra time today. During
the kid show I ran into one of the Math Enrichment teachers. She had
come with all three of her boys but the youngest one is only good for
about 30 minutes so they were out walking around the lobby.
My favorite quote from my reading today came in a short story. I
didn't really like the short story but the structure of it was
interesting and I liked this quote: “[T]his was the way people get
to know each other, by telling each other things that aren't
relevant. By letting their words fly happily, irresponsibly, until
they reach dangerous territories.”
After I failed to contact the new volunteer kid on his phone, I
called the foster house and got really lucky. Apparently he learned
yesterday that he would be movie in with his grandparents and I
caught him in mid-move. We bumped back the visit a half an hour to
give him some more time but then we ended up having a forty-five
minute visit.
His grandparents work at a hotel and live in an apartment in the
hotel. The kid said last night he slept on the couch but I assume
that situation will be fixed. The kid said he doesn't mind that he
was moved but he also liked his foster placement. Thankfully he just
moved a mile or two away in the same town so he'll still get to see
his foster brothers. He said in the next few weeks his sister might
also be moving in with him and the grandparents. He also told me
that he missed taking the ACT because no one came to pick him up. He
wasn't sure if someone was picking him up but he assumed someone was
so he missed the test. I just checked and it looks like the next
round of testing starts in September. Hopefully he can get to that
one.
When I got home I watched World Cup games. Wayne Rooney scored his
first after World Cup goal, after numerous attempt in this game and
all the ones he has played in previously, but England still lost to
Uruguay. That is even more sad considering Luis Suarez scored both
of Uruguay's goals and he had knee surgery a month ago. The best
game today was Japan v. Greece. There was more diving than I would
have liked but it wasn't nearly as bad as some teams. The fun part
was how hard each team was trying. Greece went down to ten men in
the first half due to a red card (two yellows equaling a red, not a
straight-up red, but it was still the first red card in Greece's
history as a team). Japan ended up controlling the ball most of the
game but you really couldn't tell that Greece was down a man because
each dude was going full out. And Japan gave it right back. The
game ended without a goal but both teams are still alive.
