A lazy Mothers Day.
So a fairly typical Sunday. Most of my day was spent doing nothing.
I looked for funny e-cards for my mom and found a couple, which I
sent her and she enjoyed. I also found one that was a coupon. I
liked it but it was too specific so I made my own that said “Good
for one non-condescending tutorial on how to do something difficult
with electronics”. That ended up taking a bit of work because you
can create your own card on Someecards.com but you can't make
coupons. You also can't save the cards you create without logging
in, which I couldn't be bothered to do. So I screencapped the
preview screen, cut the card out in Gimp, and then added in 'mom
coupon' at the bottom and a dashed cut line around the edge.
While I worked on
that I caught up on YouTube videos and watched the end of the
Barclays Premier League game on TV, which Manchester City won. My
mom gives me crap for liking soccer because she says it's boring.
And I can see how people think that. I used to think that about
NASCAR but when you actually sit down and watch a race, not just a
few minutes, you see all the stuff that actually goes into it.
Soccer is kind of the same way. In other sports it is pretty much a
given that people are going to score. Several times in football and
baseball or a whole bunch of times in basketball. There is skill
involved with all of that but scoring is almost inevitable. In
soccer, so much excitement is built up by all of the near misses that
by the time someone actually scores it means way more than an
inevitable goal. A player can't just run to the opponents goal and
score. I like that build up. I can actually get excited about
someone scoring when I have watched them come close over and over and
over again and then finally get just the right touch on the ball.
The game is also constantly going. So much of the other major sports
is taken up by timeouts and commercial breaks and just downtime in
general. Soccer isn't like that which means it can keep my interest.
You never know when something exciting is going to happen. One of
my goals this summer is to watch all of the World Cup games that I
can. I think it was during the last World Cup that I watched almost
all of the games. I am going to try it again and hope I can avoid
spoilers. That can be difficult when it's a bigger game.
Going back to my mom
thinking soccer is boring. Not an hour after saying this, she tells
me about how she was just in the backyard watching two bugs. Really.
Bugs are cool but if you find yourself watching two of them in your
backyard for more than a second or two, you have no room to comment
on the entertainment level of soccer.
For dinner my mom
wanted to go to a barbecue place but when we drove by there was a
line out the door and none of us wanted to wait. It was the same
place we went for my brother's birthday and the food was alright but
not worth waiting forever for. Instead we went to a Mexican
restaurant that my mom likes. It has been awhile since I've eaten
there and it will probably be another long while. Their portions are
so big and I ate all of it, including the small cheese enchilada,
which I can still feel just sitting inside of me. I have regrets.
Even more than my breakfast yesterday of a big doughnut with
chocolate icing, which had been preceded by a really big piece of
zucchini bread.
After dinner I gave
my mom her gifts, the coupons and a gift card to Bath & Body
Works. She mentioned that just yesterday she had gone with her
friend and it was the first time in a really long time that she
didn't have a gift card. It has become my go-to gift for holidays.
And this time I ended up being a day late. But she'll be ready next
time.
Tonight I played
Trials Fusion. I spent way
too much time on the previous Trials
games and I can see myself doing the same with this one. My goal on
the Easy and Medium levels is to get a gold medal before moving on,
then just beating the Hard and Extreme levels, ignoring the medal,
and going back later to try for gold. Well, with this game they end
each section with a skill game, something that had its own section in
previous games. I got caught up on one where I needed to launch off
my bike and see how far I could go. I lost track of how many
attempts I had or how much time I spent, but the numbers for both
were high. I eventually got it but I hope to never do it again.
I
took a nap this afternoon, which was nice, but it also means I'm not
quite tired yet, even though it is half past ten o'clock. So instead
of going to bed, I'm going to try and write a couple Thank You notes,
something which I meant to do earlier in the day but completely
forgot about.
