Last night I went to
bed way too late and this morning I got up way too early.
At eight o'clock I
went over to my sister's house so I could take a ride in her
husband's semi-truck, which he was taking to a nearby town to have it
worked on. Obviously, it was high up, but it was strange being able
to see the entire road. I've gotten so used to staring at tailpipes
in my short car and not even being able to see beyond the car in
front of me. It was nice.
After we dropped off
the truck we rode with my sister over to their house, which they
don't live in any more and are trying to sell. We were meeting our
step-uncle over there because he was picking up a freezer. I haven't
seen him in awhile so it was good to catch up. While we were there
we saw a big column of black smoke a few blocks away, which was
quickly followed by several fire trucks and police vehicles. We
never learned what caught on fire but they seemed to get it under
control pretty quickly.
On the way home we
stopped at Spangles and I got fries and tried their new tiny donuts.
The donuts were good but I don't know that I needed to eat six of
them. My sister still has the minivan and the middle seats are still
down from helping me move stuff, so on the way back I was sitting in
the middle of the back seat, completely stretched out. It kind of
felt like I was a rich person sitting in the back of my limo.
Once I got home I
grabbed my laundry and headed to my mom's house. I started my
laundry, and after a bit of search, found and put up the Christmas
lights. Once that was done I started on installing the timer on the
lower backyard light. It turned out to be a little more involved
than I originally thought, so it took longer than I thought, but I
got it done in the end. During the setup I put in the latitude and
longitude of our location, including the time and date, and it can
apparently automatically figure out sunset and sunrise and turn the
light on at sunset and off at sunrise. Technology. After that was
done I changed out the batteries in a few of the smoke detectors but
ran out of batteries so I'll have to do the other ones later.
My new goal every
time I go to my mom's is to leave with more stuff than I came with.
To that end, I packed up my Christmas tree, Christmas stuff, and a
few other random things. Success.
An hour or two after
getting home I went over to my friend's mom's house for dinner. I
thought it would be just him, his mom, and our other friend, but it
ended up including a large number of my friend's extended family. I
met aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. In the end I didn't
actually eat any dinner because our invitation was kind of last
minute and everything contained meat. Thankfully I ate a piece of
pizza before coming over and I ate a few carrots while my friends ate
delicious looking meat-filled food. Before the meal we all circled
around to pray. That's not my thing but I always go along with it
because why not. While we were circling up to hold hands I ended up
with my friend on one side and his older cousin on the other. I
hadn't grabbed any hands yet and his cousin said she didn't bite.
And then as soon as we held hands she bit the back of my hand. It
was pretty funny.
By the end of the
family evening my other friend was convinced this older cousin was
flirting with him, and my friend agreed that it may have been a thing
that was happening. She's apparently in the process of divorcing her
third husband so my other friend made a joke about being her fourth.
I have entertaining friends.
After the family
thing we stopped by my friend's dad's house to drop off his dog and
then we went to my house so I could give them the tour. We hung out
for awhile, playing guitar, and watching part of the original Judge
Dredd. And then we went to a bar because my friend wanted to.
We hadn't left my friend's mom's house until after ten o'clock so it
was sometime after eleven o'clock, probably closer to midnight, when
we went to the bar. I was ready for bed by eight o'clock so I wasn't
too enthused about going out to the bar, but I'm never enthused about
going to a bar, so there's that.
Despite being nearly
empty, the music was incredibly loud, as per usual in a bar. I don't
get it. I would think people go to bars to socialize but really they
just end up yelling at each other to be heard over the music. Maybe
the goal is to get people closer to one another. I think creating a
more intimate, quiet environment would go further in achieving that
goal, but what do I know.
My friends drank
several beers and I had a glass of water. About half of the time I
just sat there and watched several different TVs because even though
my friends were sitting next to me, I couldn't actually hear them
unless they were facing me when they spoke. I'm not a fan of bars.
We ended up staying
until the lights came on and made it back to the car around two
o'clock in the morning. The original plan was that my friend was not
going to drink that much so that by the time we left he would be
sober again. He may have recovered from the drinks he had at dinner
but ended up drinking way more beer than he originally planned to.
So, we ended up driving back to his mom's house, parked his vehicle
(which I had been driving) and got into mine so I could take both of
them home. I got back to my house sometime before three o'clock.
When I pulled into
my garage and tried to put the door down it would start but then go
back up. I tried three times with the same result and began to worry
it might be annoying to my neighbors, if they could hear my garage
door from their bedroom in the middle of the night. It was so late
that I kind of resigned myself to just leaving the garage door open
and worry about it in the morning, but I ended up doing some research
online. That led me to check the sensors on the door, which seemed
fine, which was good but also annoying because that would have been a
simple solution. I ended up just hitting the button a few times and
that seemed to work. Who knows.
