May 3, 2013

Today was decent but not spectacular. There were two MAP tests that went off without a hitch. I had my second grade reading group and it may have been slightly better than usual. It is infinitely more chaotic now that none of them are on the same page. Literally and figuratively. The next time I have group I might just have them all start from where the furthest behind kid is. It is also difficult for them to answer questions about the reading because they have gone so long in between reading, so it will be good for everyone to go back a bit.

Near the end of the day some fifth graders came in and asked if I could help them with the graph for their science fair project. They had it in their report but had forgotten to add labels and a title and they hadn't saved the graph. I agreed to help them but they asked right as the bell was ringing so it wasn't so much me helping them as it was me doing it for them.

Instead of remaking the graph and adding in the information, I copied the graph, pasted it into Gimp, and used text boxes to add a title and labels. That ended up being a little more involved than I originally thought but I got it done and was headed out of the lab maybe ten minutes after four o'clock.

Then I made the mistake of glancing at the graph as I was walking to the office and noticed that in the title I typed "Solvency" instead of "Absorbency", most likely because I don't think I have ever heard of the word "Absorbency" before. But I told the kids I would help them so I turned around and went back to the lab. It took for-freaking-ever for my computer to turn back on and then open everything back up but I was eventually able to send my original edit, print the graph out again, put it in the teacher's mailbox, and clocked out by close to half past four o'clock. That kind of screwed up my plans to take a nap before dinner and the theater.

At the theater I finished reading Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt. I liked the ending, though it wasn't very realistic. But it did live up to the title. Overall, I would say it was a good book. It is apparently part of a series which I am now kind of interested in checking out. Who knows if I will though.

I also started watching the first season of Arrested Development and made several false starts on the potholders I am wanting to make. I remember the basic idea of the pattern but, as always when it comes to turning with crochet, I am struggling. I think maybe I finally figured it out but by that point I needed a break.

My break took the form of sitting in one of the midnight shows of Iron Man 3, that we didn't send anyone to, and writing this on my phone. That has been a bit tedious and it doesn't help that it is freezing in this theater. My fingers are cold. The movie is good though. The comedy would be better with a crowd so I will have to go stand in some theaters tomorrow maybe. There is still an hour to go but I have nothing left to say so I am going to stop now.
