May 1, 2013

We've made it to May, but the weather didn't get the memo. It was over ninety degrees on Monday, somewhere in the eighties yesterday, cooler today, and it is supposed to snow tomorrow. Lovely. Although as stated before, I prefer cooler weather.

Yesterday I scanned a car registration for one of the paras and today I scanned a bunch of grad school homework for one of the teachers because her scanner at home wasn't working and she needed to send it to her professor. I have become quite adept at scanning stuff and turning it into PDFs. I am glad I figured that out awhile ago when archiving the letters my friend and I exchange.

We had a MAP test this morning, I helped fifth graders with Excel graphs, I had my second grade reading group, and I continued work on my recent project to collect the various test scores for all students. My second grade reading group was just as annoying as I remember. And it feels like forever since I've had them, probably over a week, but they really haven't made any progress in the book because I think they have only read once since I last saw them. And they weren't very motivated today. Much like every other day. Trying to get kids to focus on something they're not into, right before lunch, is not an easy task.

With the various test score collecting thing I was originally thinking of using Access and creating a report to make the labels. Now I have switched to a combination of Excel and Word. I can collect all the scores in Excel and then merge that data with Word and it will create the label for me. I still need to mess around with it some more to get the settings right but my brief test today looked promising. It is still exhausting staring at spreadsheets for hours. I think part of it has to do with reduced blinking.

The best part of my day was a “local” production of Frog And Toad. It originated in a theater in a nearby town and one of the kindergarten teachers set it up because his cousin was playing Frog. And I recognized Toad because he has lived in town for years since he came here to get his Masters degree. It was a very simple production but also really funny. I wanted an encore performance and I think the kids would have been into it too because they were laughing throughout the whole show. I really enjoyed it.

My para friend ended up getting into a conversation with my mom after the performance and didn't help put a single chair away but she did feel a little bad about not helping so I gave her a lot of crap about it. Luckily for me there was a lot of child labor today. I think I only ended up putting away six or seven chairs. Definitely not earning my keep.

After work and went and got Chipotle and Jimmy John's for dinner. I didn't think I was in the mood for Chipotle but it ended up being delicious. I showed some videos and pictures to my mom and sister and then sat around awhile and talked.

My Kindle and mic stand showed up tonight. I didn't open the Kindle and gave it to my mom so she can wrap it for my birthday. That was hard but I only have to wait a little while longer. I did open up my mic stand and got that figured out. I think it will work. We'll see. I'm not actually going to record my day today however because I ended up talking with my friend on the phone for quite awhile tonight. Just a bunch a random stuff. It was pretty great.

I have decided to ease back into my phone use by turning my phone on after dinner every night. And then back off when I go to bed. I don't really want to do that much but I am getting a lot of crap from my friends and family. I also took the case off my phone because I feel like it is on its last legs and I wanted to experience my phone for a little while in the way it was meant to be experienced. It is such a small, good looking phone, and I had completely forgotten about that. I'll probably drop it and break it tomorrow.
