Waking up this morning was a little rough. The rest of the day was
also a little rough. I'm too old for only five hours of sleep.
To help my currently sleep deprived brain I had the forethought to
take notes about my day.
When I got to work I took down the adulting posters from last night
and restocked my DVD display. I then went up to the third floor and
zoned out for awhile. I sent a survey for the class last night (so I
wouldn't forget about it) and then I worked on my mock-up for putting
a giant sign on the outside of the library. I also made a couple
with those giant building banners. I like the simplicity of our
current sign on the building but it also makes it almost impossible
to tell what the building is until you accidentally spot our sign.
Or already know it's a library. I also took a couple pictures in the
atrium for inside signage.
I tried to email the lady who is supposed to teach our next adulting
class but the email bounced back. I tried looking around their
website and every link I found that mentioned her was broken. I
eventually emailed their administrative assistant to find out what
was up. I got a response back from another woman who is now leading
the class because the other woman apparently left the organization
back in August. The new woman had planned on emailing me this week
and was glad to hear from me, mostly because she thought the class
was next week. I sent her an email with as much information as I had
about the class and we'll see tomorrow if she has any questions.
There was a brief moment of panic after the bounced email and the
lack of evidence that the one woman existed, but now I'm feeling much
better.
I composed the Thank You note for last night's presenter and dropped
it off with the teen librarian so she could actually write it. Maybe
someday I'll write one but I think we've got a good system now with
me composing and her writing because her handwriting is much more
legible than mine.
I got one of my favorite reference questions today. An old man came
in and wanted a copy of page 266 from the Fall issue of the Sears,
Roebuck, & Co. catalog from 1900. Very specific. And very
helpful. The page was an advertisement for banjos and his 96 year
old mother still has one she got from the catalog. I used Google to
search for a Sears catalog archive and the second link had the right
date range and took me to Ancestry.com. I was able to pull up the
list of the catalogs but when I clicked on the one I wanted it
prompted me to log in. I don't have a login but we have access
through the library so I backed up and went to Ancestry through our
website. Then I was able to search the card catalog and found my way
back to where I was, and this time I was able to access the catalog.
The digital page numbers didn't match up with the physical page
numbers but I was quickly able to find the right page and it had the
advertisement just like the guy said. I don't know how he knew the
page number but I was thankful because the catalog was over 800 pages
and it would have taken forever to click through it. He was very
thankful and I think we were both equally surprised that I was able
to find it so quickly.
On one of my walkthroughs I finally pulled books for the staff picks
display, which we have started up again. I went with books I have
actually read this time but I'll probably go back to books I want to
read for the next round. Today I went with two photography books,
one about the Japanese internment during WWII and the other about
immigrants at Ellis Island, a short graphic novel, and the audiobook
I listened to on my trip to and from my friend's wedding. An
eclectic selection.
Throughout the day I looked at the veggie burger that I have as my
desktop background on one of the computers at work. I'm eating less
at lunch so I am actually hungry when dinner rolls around. By the
time it was getting close to quitting time my rumbling stomach was
drawn to that veggie burger and decided I was going to skip Qdoba and
go to Freddy's instead. I offered my Mom and sister the same option
and they both agreed so it was a Freddy's night. And it was
delicious. It smelled so good on the way home. I definitely ate way
too much but it was so good.
After dinner we watched a bunch of videos and then my sister and I
both headed out at eight o'clock. She needed to go to Home Depot and
I needed to come home so I could get a start on this. It is now
10:15PM, because I got distracted by videos, but I should still be
able to make it to bed at a decent time and hopefully six o'clock
won't be too bad tomorrow morning.
